2011 - Current

In 2011 Barry O'Farrell led the Coalition to a comprehensive victory winning the election with a swing of over 16%, the highest for a general election in Australia since World War II.

The Coalition victory saw the Liberals and Nationals secure 69 seats – the largest majority government in the state’s history.

The O’Farrell Government acted swiftly to deliver on its Five Point Action Plan: to rebuild the economy, return quality service, renovate infrastructure, restore accountability and protect the local environment and communities.

Following Barry’s resignation on 16 April 2014, Mike Baird was elected Leader of the Liberal Party and became the State’s 44th Premier.

The Baird Government continued to build on the work of the O’Farrell Government and adopted a bold plan to unlock $20 billion in infrastructure funding for local and major roads and rail networks, schools, hospitals and water infrastructure by undertaking a long-term lease of the state’s poles and wires network.

On 23 January 2017, Gladys Berejiklian was elected Leader becoming the 45th Premier of NSW, and she created history on 23 March 2019 when she became the first female Premier elected at a general election.

Strong fiscal management by the Berejikilian Government has seen continued record investment in health, education, transport and infrastructure throughout the state, to ensure the people of NSW have access to the services they need when they need them.

Other achievements have included:

  • The creation of Infrastructure NSW

  • NSW becoming the first state or territory to secure funding for the full rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the first to sign up to the Gonski national education reforms

  • Delivering record investment in new roads, public transport, health & education

  • Opening the redeveloped International Convention Centre in Sydney

  • Launching the Opal Card for travel on the public transport network and setting a weekly $50 cap on Opal Card travel

  • Opening of the North West Metro and the Light Rail in Sydney CBD, as well as the opening of Stage 1 of WestConnex and NorthConnex

  • Launching the Return & Earn container deposit scheme

  • Introducing the Active Kids and Creative Kids programs, providing vouchers for school-aged children for sport, recreation and creative arts activities.
