Liberal Senator for New South Wales, Maria Kovacic, and Liberal Candidate for Shortland, Emma King, have been meeting with local small businesses to hear about their plight in the midst of Labor’s cost of living crisis.

After 3 years under Labor small businesses have never done it so tough, crumbling under the weight of Labor’s economic mismanagement and red tape.

Daisy Grace’s Lifestyle, a Swansea homewares business, is one of the many Shortland businesses struggling to keep their doors open, like so many other small businesses across the nation.

The Albanese Labor Government has failed small businesses, presiding over an unprecedented wave of insolvencies. In 2024 alone, more than 13,000 businesses collapsed - the highest annual total in Australian history.

The Prime Minister has dodged the crisis facing small businesses, falsely claiming on ABC’s Q&A on February 24, 2025, that Australia had a record number of small businesses. This was untrue, with 19,000 small businesses lost in the December 2024 quarter.

Since taking office, Labor has also overseen a sharp decline in small businesses, with almost 32,000 shutting down under their watch.

The Coalition’s Small Business Plan

A Coalition Government will be unashamedly pro small business, delivering reforms to help the small business sector grow and get back on track.

We will cut red tape that is stopping businesses from getting ahead, reduce the tax burden on business expenditure and deliver competition policy to give small businesses a fair go.

Small businesses with a turnover of up to $10 million will be eligible for a capped tax deduction of $20,000 for business-related meal and entertainment expenses.

The Coalition will also move to make the $20,000 Instant Asset Write Off permanent, saving more than 98 per cent of businesses the hassle of dealing with depreciation schedules when they invest in their businesses.

Quotes attributable to Emma King

“Helping out with our family business, I know first-hand how tough local businesses are doing it under the Albanese Labor Government – it has never been this tough, and it’s time they stop taking our community for granted.”

“Small businesses are the backbone of communities like Swansea, yet this Labor Government just stood by as the cost of doing business has skyrocketed, forcing many to shut their doors."

"I will proudly stand as a fierce advocate for small businesses in Shortland and deliver real results for my local community."

Quotes attributable to Senator Maria Kovacic:

“Only Emma King and a Dutton Coalition Government will slash red tape and back our country’s small businesses”

“The Albanese Labor Government is crushing small business, the Coalition will always back local small businesses and the positive impact they make on their communities”

“Labor has proven they are out of their depth when it comes to small business and the only way to see change is to elect Emma King in Shortland as part of a Dutton Coalition Government”
