A re-elected Morrison Government will invest $5 million to develop a technology skills passport that will open pathways for Australians to get a job in the fast-growing technology sector.
As part of our plan to build a strong economy, a stronger future and ensure more Australians can get into work, this commitment builds on our pledge to create 1.3 million more hobs over the next five years - including 450,000 jobs in regional Australia.
Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business, Stuart Robert, said the Coalition had a strong track record when it comes to job creation.
“Under the Coalition Government, over 1.9 million more Australians are in work, despite the COVID-19 global pandemic, around two-thirds of these new jobs are full-time,” Minister Robert said.
“To ensure Australians can match their skills with industry needs, we will partner with the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) to accelerate the implementation of skills passports.
"Critically, the new and innovative partnership aligns with work already underway to achieve the longer-term vision of creating an integrated tertiary system—providing a single point of entry for Australians to ‘rack and stack’ credentials across the university and VET sectors.”
The technology skills passport will expand access to recognition of prior learning and get people qualified with the skills industry needs and into a job faster.
Equipping our Australian workforce with the skills needed for the jobs of today and tomorrow is part of the Coalition’s plan to lead Australia’s strong economy into the future.
“We are driving the unemployment rate down to below four per cent, meaning we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to get every single Australian who wants a job in a job,” Minister Robert said.
“Where there are skills gaps to fill, we want Australians to have the first crack at getting that opportunity and our skills passport approach will enable rapid upskilling and reskilling.
“These investments will mean more skilled workers, lower unemployment, and a stronger future not just for apprentices and trainees, but for Australia.
“We have delivered record levels of support to save a generation of skilled Australians, and prioritised retention and growth in trade and non-trade apprenticeships and traineeships.”
Today’s announcement builds on the Morrison Government’s $3.7 billion investment to support 800,000 training positions, ensuring Australians have the skills they need.
We’re also providing $2.8 billion in additional incentives to train the next generation of apprentices and trainees.
“Labor always talk the talk on local jobs, but never walk the walk,” Minister Robert said.
“They don’t have an economic plan, and the very few policies they have announced would do nothing to help more Australians into work.
“Labor would create a weak economy because Anthony Albanese is a weak leader – a leader who’s more focused on creating jobs overseas than he is in Australia.”
Only the Liberals have a plan to build a strong economy and a stronger future for all Australians.
