NSW Liberal Central Coast candidates have jointly called on the Albanese Labor Government to oppose the extension of PEP-11 offshore mining and ensure that the project is stopped.
The NSW Government has been steadfastly opposed to PEP-11, and had taken a clear stand against offshore coal and petroleum exploration and mining due to its many potential negative impacts.
Premier Dominic Perrottet has written to, and had a discussion with the Prime Minister, reaffirming the NSW Government’s opposition to the extension of PEP-11.
“The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government opposed the extension of PEP-11 in 2022, and although a decision has yet to be made by the Federal Court of Australia, I reaffirm our opposition as we have done over a number of years. The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government will always stand up for the best interests of our communities.”
Liberal Member for Terrigal, Adam Crouch MP, was the first MP to come out against PEP-11 and has been championing his community’s opposition since 2017.
“Our Government has been absolutely resolute in opposition to the PEP-11 permit, and I strongly encourage Prime Minister Albanese to follow through with his commitment and again reject this permit for good,” said Mr Crouch. “My strong objections on behalf of our community have made it very clear that we do not support this appalling project.”
“While it was originally approved by the former NSW State Labor Government, the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government had recommended refusal of this project twice. If this extension proceeds it will be a disgusting act of betrayal by Prime Minister Albanese who stood on Avoca Beach during the federal election campaign and promised to stop PEP-11.”
Liberal Candidate for The Entrance, Nathan Bracken, said the Liberal Party will continue to champion the community and oppose the drilling.
“Our unique coastline must be protected, and it would be an absolute tragedy if this project was to go ahead,” said Mr Bracken. “I stand with our Premier against the poor judgment of the Albanese Government. This extension must not be granted, and the Coast protected from the offshore drilling.”
Liberal Candidate for Gosford, Dee Bocking, said Central Coast community was united in its opposition to PEP-11.
“We will continue our tireless opposition until the Albanese Government ends the extension and PEP-11 is no more,” said Ms Bocking. “We have steadfastly opposed PEP-11 for years and will continue to do so, with the Premier working hard to lead the charge against this application.”
