The future of Corrective Services NSW is rapidly evolving as the next generation of correctional officers begin training to protect the state’s prisons, rehabilitate inmates and ensure the community’s safety.
The 230 new trainee officers are part of Project 800, a recruitment drive started in February in order to recruit 800 permanent correctional officers.
The new drive is the largest ever undertaken by CSNSW and will see the first round of recruits spend almost 10 weeks training at Brush Farm Corrective Services Academy in Sydney’s north.
Minister for Corrections Geoff Lee said due to the large number of new recruits the training schedule was the heavist CSNSW had faced, but was essential to maintain the security and management of correctional centres.
“Correctional officers are the backbone of our state’s prisons and ensure the more than 12,000 inmates in our care are looked after and fully supported in their rehabilitation,” Minister Lee said.
“These officers are a much valued and critical part of the prison network who face extremely demanding situations each day.
“They are tirelessly dedicated to their work and consistently rise to the challenge of keeping our communities safe and securing a brighter future for our state.”
Commissioner Kevin Corcoran PSM said a career in corrections is tough but rewarding.
“Our recruits are committed to delivering programs, education, practical skills and training to people in custody while maintaining a safe and respectful workplace environment,” Commissioner Corcoran said.
“Turning someone’s life around – and showing a commitment to our values of reducing reoffending and keeping the community safe – is one of the most important jobs there is.”
Recruits will undergo world-class training in defensive tactics, weapons handling, managing violent offenders and responding to critical situations.
They will also undergo incident training covering cell fires, disturbances, self-harm and conflict negotiation.
Trainees also attend prisons for on-the-job training, which includes contraband searches.
