In a landmark budget announcement the Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro and Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey today announced that every major highway in NSW will now be sealed after an additional $40 million to seal the last 200 kilometres of the Cobb and Silver City highways.
Mr Barilaro said he was thrilled to announce that this year’s budget allocation for sealing country roads will ensure all of NSW’s major highways are completely sealed and weather proof by 2023.
“The Berejiklian-Barilaro Government is the first Government in the history of NSW to ensure all of the state’s major highways are sealed, safer, more reliable and accessible for all motorists no matter what the weather,” Mr Barilaro said.
“This Government is committed to making sure that regional NSW is a safe and secure place to work, live and raise a family and improving our road network is essential to that,” he said.
Mrs Pavey said sealing the final 107 kilometres of the Silver City Highway – 55 kilometres to the south of Tibooburra and 52 kilometres to the north - and the 94 kilometres of the Cobb Highway will mean improved freight efficiency,” Mrs Pavey.
“This new funding will take the total investment to $130 million since 2011 which will allow provision of more than 280 kilometres of weather resilient and more durable highway.
“This will support tourism and economic development and ensure safer and more reliable journeys on these vital transport and freight routes which service isolated communities such as Tibooburra, Ivanhoe and Packsaddle,” she said.
Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries said he was extremely proud to be part of a government who will do what no previous government has been able to – finally complete the sealing of the NSW State Highway network.
“Sealing the last 200 kilometres of the Cobb and Silver City highways in NSW will mean these roads will finally be all weather roads for the first time in the State’s history, providing reliable access to regional services for remote communities,” Mr Humphries said.
Work to seal the road is currently under way and new work will start on the last 200 kilometres in September 2018.
