Sydney Metro West will receive $6.4 billion over four years as the 2019-20 NSW Budget delivers on the Government’s promise to accelerate construction on the landmark project.
The $6.4 billion committed demonstrates that a NSW Liberals & Nationals Government will deliver on its promises in contrast with Labor who promised the world and delivered nothing during their time in office.
Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said the decision to fast-track construction is only possible because of the NSW Government’s strong economic management.
“We always said we would build Metro West as fast as possible. This commitment in the State Budget shows that when we commit to doing something, we mean business,” Mr Constance said.
“We have worked our guts out to get the budget in a strong position and now we are able to deliver crucial rail projects like Metro West quicker than anyone thought was possible.”
Mr Constance said Metro West will more than double the existing rail capacity between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD and will slash travel times between Parramatta and the city to just 20 minutes.
“Only this Government can be trusted to make that a reality. We will provide $6.4 billion for Metro West over the forward estimates to make this project happen,” Mr Constance said.
“Labor has promised a Metro to Western Sydney three times since the mid-90s and cancelled it every time. In 2010 they were so incompetent they handed $81 million back to the Federal Government after cancelling it once again.
“We already have the runs on the board. We’ve opened North West Metro with phenomenal results and construction is well underway on Sydney Metro City & Southwest.”
Construction on Metro West will start next year. The final schedule for the project will be confirmed on completion of the final business case.
An initial reservation of $3 billion was included in last year’s budget. This amount forms part of the $6.4 billion committed to during the recent state election.
