One of Sydney’s oldest animal shelters will soon have a new home of its own at Kurnell, thanks to support from the NSW Government.
The Sydney Dogs and Cats Home, which has operated at a site in Carlton since 1946, was given notice to relocate in 2015 due to private redevelopment.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the home had written to the NSW Government to seek help to find a new parcel of land.
“The shelter does such great work caring for lost and stray animals in Sydney, so we had to find some land,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“It is great to be able to announce the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home will soon be moving to a Crown land site in Kurnell.
“Last year the home reunited 862 lost pets with their owners and found new homes for 1741 animals in their care, which is a tremendous effort by all the volunteers.”
Minister for Lands and Forestry Paul Toole said the home planned to build a new animal shelter and community facility, which would be the first of its kind in NSW.
“I am pleased we’ve been able to help secure the future of Sydney’s only not-for-profit pound with the offer of a lease of up to 50 years,” Mr Toole said.
“The new fit-for-purpose facility will allow the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home to triple its intake of animals, helping to alleviate the pressure on other organisations.”
President of Sydney Dogs and Cats Home Wendy Langley said she was delighted the shelter could continue to provide for animals in need.
“We remain committed to leading the way in animal welfare practices, such as being the first NSW shelter to join the Getting to Zero initiative, never putting a time limit on any adoptable pet in our care,” Ms Langley said. “The new site will mean we can build a facility which includes kennels and exercise yards for our dogs, a larger cattery for our furry felines, an onsite veterinary clinic and community facility.
“It’s been a long road to get us to where we are today and thanks to the support of the State Government, and the greater community, we are now in a position to provide a world-class service for many years to come.”
Member for Cronulla Mark Speakman said he was thrilled to welcome the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home to Kurnell.
“While they support and care for animals, the home also runs a number of successful community programs, which include supporting injured trainee soldiers, a youth mental health program and providing aged-care home visits,” Mr Speakman said.
“I’ve met with the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home a number of times, and I am looking forward to supporting them and working with them in the years to come.”
Member for Coogee Bruce Notley-Smith said he had supported the Sydney Dogs and Cats Home for many years and was delighted with the outcome.
“I’ve followed the great work of this wonderful organisation for many years, watching as they welcome more than 3000 furry friends each year. I have no doubt the new facility will really allow them to spread their wings,” Mr Notley-Smith said.
The Sydney Dogs and Cats Home takes in animals of all shapes, sizes and age, including dogs, cats, birds and “pocket pets” – rabbits, guinea pigs, and birds.
