The Morrison Government is continuing its support for Australian manufacturing, delivering benefits for local jobs, our national security and the energy sector.
Liberal candidate for Whitlam, Mike Cains, welcomed the Morrison Government’s investment of more than $55 million in shoring up the supply of Aussie steel. This $217 million Advanced Steel Manufacturing Precinct around Bluescope’s Port Kembla steelworks, will be funded under the Collaboration Stream of the $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative.
The precinct includes a new facility that will be able to produce plate steel for Defence armoured vehicles and patrol boats, as well as the type of steel used to create wind turbine towers and large-scale solar installations. This will reduce the need for overseas imports and secure our sovereign capability in steel fabrication.
More than 200 people will be employed directly in steel manufacturing once the precinct is up and running, with about 1000 more workers in adjacent industries.
Mr Cains said the announcement showed the Government’s ongoing focus on local manufacturing and building local jobs.
“This investment will boost Australian-made steel, and be a catalyst for more high-wage, high-skill jobs in BlueScope and beyond,” said Mr Cains. “With this investment, the Morrison Government isn’t just helping to create today’s jobs – but will create a pathway for our kids and their jobs of the future.”
Mr Cains said that this investment in the steelworks would also help to build the case for Port Kembla to be a strong contender for a future submarine base.
“In addition to our great Defence and scientific assets at Albatross, Jervis Bay and University of Wollongong, this will add another strategic capability into the Illawarra mix.”
Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor said the enhanced capability at Port Kembla will bolster domestic supply chains, as well as increasing the downstream local manufacture of steel goods right here at home.
“This precinct represents an incredible win-win – not only increasing the local production of Aussie-made steel, but also helping build up our renewable energy and defence sectors,” Minister Taylor said.
“The Port Kembla steelworks has a proud history. This precinct will help Bluescope thrive into the future and create more jobs in the region.
“The Morrison Government is determined to back our steel industry, the manufacturing sectors it helps drive and the local communities they represent.”
